Nature Playgroup at St Joseph’s

At St Joseph’s Primary School, we believe that learning and connection should begin long before a child starts their first day of Prep. Our Nature Playgroup is a unique, on-site initiative designed specifically for babies, toddlers, and preschool-aged children. By immersing our youngest community members in the great outdoors, we foster a sense of wonder, curiosity, and belonging within our school grounds.

A Natural Classroom

Our playgroup sessions take full advantage of the rich, diverse environments available at St Joseph’s. Rather than being confined to four walls, children and their parents or carers explore:

  • The School Garden: A sensory-rich space where children can touch the soil, observe plants growing, and learn about the cycles of nature.

  • The Wetlands: A place of discovery where little ones can observe local birdlife and learn to appreciate the importance of our local ecosystems.

  • The Natural Playground: Designed to encourage “risky play” in a safe environment, our playground uses logs, rocks, and sand to help children develop balance, coordination, and physical confidence.

  • The School Café: A welcoming hub for our families. After a morning of exploration, the café provides a space for parents to connect over a coffee while children enjoy a snack and social interaction.

Why Nature Play?

Research shows that outdoor play in natural settings is vital for early childhood development. Our Nature Playgroup focuses on:

  • Resilience & Problem Solving: Navigating natural uneven terrain and engaging with open-ended materials like sticks and stones.

  • Social Connection: Providing a gentle introduction to the school environment, helping children (and parents) build friendships before they begin their formal schooling journey.

  • Environmental Stewardship: Cultivating an early love for the planet and an understanding of our responsibility to care for the earth.

Join Us

Our sessions are held weekly on Friday mornings, on the school grounds and are open to all families in the local community. It is a wonderful way to experience the St Joseph’s Way firsthand while watching your child grow through play.
