Physical Education & Sport at St Joseph’s
At St Joseph’s Primary School, we pride ourselves on a vibrant sporting culture that promotes physical literacy, resilience, and community spirit. Our program is strictly aligned with the Victorian Curriculum 2.0, focusing on the development of movement skills and the social benefits of physical activity.
Weekly Specialist Lessons
Every student from Prep to Grade 6 participates in a weekly 45-minute Physical Education session. These lessons are designed to build a solid foundation of Fundamental Motor Skills (FMS), including:
-
Ball Skills: Throwing, catching, kicking, bouncing, and striking.
-
Movement & Coordination: Agility, jumping, skipping, athletics, and gymnastics.
-
Personal Growth: Every session emphasizes fitness, teamwork, coordination, and the importance of good sportsmanship.
Competitive Sport & Representative Pathways
Our senior students engage in a diverse range of competitive events throughout the year, including Summer and Winter Lightning Premierships, Cross Country, Athletics, and Triathlons. We also facilitate Bike Education to ensure our students are safe and confident on their wheels.
We have a proud history of excellence, with many students progressing beyond the school gates to represent St Joseph’s at Regional and State levels in swimming, cross country, athletics, and basketball.
Parish & Community Connections

A major highlight of our sporting calendar is the Annual Parish Sports Carnival (Junior and Senior). These events bring together our three Parish schools—St Joseph’s, St Mary’s, and St Brendan’s—allowing our students to connect, compete, and build friendships across our wider community.
To celebrate the end of the year, we host our Annual Colour Explosion Run. This high-energy community event invites families to join in the fun and celebrate the incredible sporting abilities and spirit of our children.
Water Safety & Life Saving
Living in our beautiful coastal region, water safety is a priority:
-
Intensive Swim Program: Held in the final week of each school year at the Crib Point swimming pool, students undertake daily 30-minute sessions focused on water awareness and survival skills.
-
Beach Safety: In partnership with the Pt. Leo Lifesaving Club, we run junior and senior Lifesaving Beach Days, teaching students how to safely enjoy and respect the ocean environment.
Physical Education & Sport at St Joseph’s
At St Joseph’s Primary School, Physical Education (PE) is more than just playing games; it is a vital part of developing the “whole child.” Our program is grounded in the Victorian Curriculum 2.0, focusing on two key strands: Movement and Physical Activity and Personal, Social, and Community Health.
Through a sequence of structured lessons, we aim to build physical literacy, ensuring every student graduates with the confidence and competence to lead an active, healthy life.
