Science

Curriculum Designwetlands
Science is taught as part of the Inquiry curriculum from Prep – Grade 6.  The curriculum follows a scope and sequence that allows for the continued development of skills and knowledge from the early years through to the upper levels. Science is of a hands on nature, where students are supported to see Science in their everyday interactions in the areas of Chemical, Physical, Biological and Earth and Space Sciences.

Teaching and Learning
Students are provided with explicit hands on teaching of the necessary skills through to real world contemporary practices and understandings. We allow students to investigate and apply their knowledge to new and relevant situations.

Staff
sustainability
Staff participate in regular Professional learning that is in line with the vision of Science at St Joseph’s School. They continue to strive for best practice through observation and reflection with peers within and outside of the school. Staff have been heavily supported by the Catholic Education Office with Professional Learning opportunities and cluster groups. The school has a Science Leader who supports classroom teachers in their planning. The school also employs a gardener and a chef to work directly with the children

Parents and Community
Our Science Program is heavily supported by many outside agencies and community groups. These include The Catholic Education Office Melbourne, Western Port Seagrass Partnership, The Dolphin Research Institute and
wetlands2the Mornington Peninsula Shire.  We work closely with a variety of school both locally and interstate. We have a learning partnership with a school in Lombok Indonesia. St Joseph’s School aims to develop partnerships within the school and the wider community, as we connect our students learning to the real world.

Resources
Our Biological Science program is supported by our wonderful school environment which includes a wetlands, community garden and a hothouse. Teaching is engaging and relevant students have access to a variety of resources and programs, including our Mangrove Regeneration Program, Outdoor Kitchen and student run Café.
